Welcome to Week 3, where I start creating my website. From Week 2, I picked the Home Automation niche to enter. This week I look at domain name, hosting and platform for the site.
When it comes to domain name, I usually do a brainstorming with possible options and then bulk check at Namecheap.com for availability.
I use the following criteria when selecting a domain name:
- I go for .com always. If the .com is not available and normally pick a new name or go for .net
- I ensure that the domain name contains one of my keyword if possible. This is not a must but could help down the road with my SEO efforts. I don’t fuss over this though.
- Ideally I don’t want my domain name to contain any dashes as long as it describes my niche, I am good.
With this in mind here are the 10 possible names I came up for my domain name:
As previously mentioned my favorite tool for domain availability check and registration is namecheap.com
Step 1 – I head over to http://www.namecheap.com
Step 2 – …And paste my options into the Bulk Options search box then click on Search
Step 3 – As you can see in the picture below, only one of my choices is available for Grab: homeautomationtrends.com
Step 4- I add it to my cart and apply any valid coupon (namecheap has always a monthly coupon you can apply to your order for some discount).
Once the domain is registered, I need to point it to my hosting company.
I have been using Inmotionhosting as hosting company since 2005 and I am quite happy with their quality of service. I have a plan that allows me to add unlimited domains to my account.
To connect my newly registered domain to my hosting, I need to setup the name servers properly.
In the dashboard of your namecheap account (assuming you are using namecheap), click on “manage” next to the domain you’ve just registered:
Under Basic DNS, select Custom DNS and enter the name servers of your host.
Now go to your hosting company and add the new domain into your account. In my case I will add the new domain as an addon domain in cpanel:
Click on “Addon Domains” and fill in the required information.
Click on “Add Domain” once you are done. You will get a message confirming that your domain has been added as shown below:
Next I will install WordPress as my favorite blog platform.
I you have a host that uses cpanel then you probably have a software installer such as Softaculous that will install wordpress in 1 Click automatically for you.
Here is how the basic look and feel of my site is after installing Worpdress:
Next I will pick a theme that is mobile responsive and look professional enough for my niche.
I recommend a professional theme such as Genesis or Sahifa.
I also suggest adding the following core plugins:
- Yoast SEO
- Contact Form 7
- iThemes Security
- Pretty Link Lite
- W3 Total Cache
In Week 4, I will share the new look and feel of the site before starting to add some content.
